It Starts With Noticing

On time, attention, and the things that don't last.

Heidi Hjort in her studioFor a long time I moved through life on autopilot, like most of us do at first.
Doing the right things.
Keeping up.
Moving quickly from one moment to the next, barely landing anywhere in between.

Everything looked fine from the outside. On the inside, something felt flat — like I was skimming the surface of my own life.

I didn't have words for it then. I just knew I was rushing past something important.

Then life interrupted.
Not gently.
Not all at once in a neat, cinematic way — but enough to make one thing unmistakably clear:

Our time here is limited.

Knowing a moment won't come back changes how you stand inside it.
It sharpens attention.
Slows you down.
Softens the heart.

I started noticing.

The more I paid attention to what was fleeting — light, seasons, moods —the more alive everything became:

A lake checking her reflection.
Frost arriving gently.
Winter tucking in summer’s leftovers for the long sleep.

These moments are fleeting, and that’s exactly what makes them precious.

Close up of a paintingThis is not art to match the couch.
It's art that notices what most people walk past.
Art that slows a room down.
Made of presence and wonder.

So if you ever find yourself looking at one of my paintings thinking
“That’s me… I’m the lake,”
—you’re in the right place.

Artist Statement

Noticing is where it all begins.
Through nature’s moods, everyday rituals, and minimalist restraint, I explore the art of impermanence — the fleeting moments that slip by quietly, shaping us as they go.
Each piece is a small pause inside that transience,
a reminder that beauty isn’t rare,
it’s just easy to miss.

Artist Bio

Heidi Hjort is a contemporary painter whose work invites viewers to slow down and rediscover the quiet beauty hidden in everyday life.

Guided by a soft, neutral palette and layered, subtle textures, her paintings evoke a sense of calm, presence, and gentle wonder — a pause button in visual form.

Her journey includes the quiet turning points that gradually pull you out of autopilot — moments that remind you life is short, soft, and happening now. Through them, she moved from feeling numb to noticing again, finding beauty in the fleeting and meaning in the overlooked.

A formative student exchange in Japan sparked her lifelong connection to wabi-sabi, eastern philosophy, and the beauty of impermanence — themes that continue to infuse her work.

Collectors are drawn to Heidi’s art for its ability to transform spaces into sanctuaries. Whether displayed in a modern home, a serene workspace, or a gallery setting, her paintings offer a moment of stillness — an invitation to notice, breathe, and feel the poetry of the present moment.
